Blue Ridge Parkway

Virginia / North Carolina

Blue Ridge Parkway

The Blue Ridge Parkway is a National Park Service road with its own pace. Commercial traffic is restricted, the speed limit is low, and services are spaced out. Mileposts increase southbound. Pair it with a Shenandoah day at the north end or a Smokies day at the south end, not both if you only have a long weekend. Fall color weekends fill overlooks. If the Parkway is closed by ice or slides, US-221 and I-81/I-40 are the unglamorous backups—use them rather than forcing a fog-slick ridgeline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I tow a trailer?

The Parkway has tunnels, low speed, and limited shoulders. Read current NPS length guidance. Many travelers leave large rigs in town.

Is October too crowded?

Weekends can be bumper-to-bumper at famous overlooks. Midweek and early or late color weeks are easier. Fog still happens in peak color.
