3-Day Yosemite Adventure

Trip Overview

Three days in Yosemite is enough for the valley floor, one waterfall climb, and one high viewpoint—if you do not also try to ‘see Tahoe.’ Enter with reserved lodging or a very early arrival plan. Summer vehicle lines are part of the itinerary. This plan keeps Half Dome off the default list; add it only if you already hold a cables permit and are willing to spend one of your three days entirely on that trail.

Driving timeAbout 4 hours from the Bay Area to the valley in light traffic; more on Friday afternoons
HikingOne moderate waterfall day, one viewpoint day, one easy valley day
OvernightsYosemite Valley if you can; El Portal or Mariposa if you cannot
Ideal seasonLate May–October for Tioga access; valley is year-round with winter limits

Best Time to Go

May–June for waterfalls. September for drier trails and slightly easier parking. July–August are the hardest for cars and beds.

Budget Considerations

We do not list live prices. Check current park fees and lodging quotes.

Packing List

Day-by-day structure

Day 1 — Valley orientation

Yosemite Valley · Half day plus arrival · Driving: Arrival day. Limit extra side trips.

Morning. Drive in early. Stop at Tunnel View if the pullout is safe to enter. Do not block the road.

Afternoon. Check in, then walk the valley loop segments you can do from your lodging: river paths, Yosemite Falls view if the flow is on, a visitor center hour.

Evening. Cook or eat early. Set out clothes for a dawn start.

Hiking options. Easy valley walks only

Scenic stops. Tunnel View; Valley View if you are west-side

Overnight. Yosemite Valley or El Portal

Planning notes. If you arrive late, skip the falls hike tonight. Sleep is the scarce resource.

Day 2 — Mist Trail

Happy Isles · 5–8 hours on trail for the top of Vernal; less for the bridge · Driving: Shuttle, not a long car day

Morning. Shuttle to Happy Isles. Hike the Mist Trail to the Vernal Fall footbridge or the top of Vernal Fall if conditions and fitness match.

Afternoon. Return, rest, and a slow food stop. Optional: a very short additional walk, not another climb.

Evening. Early night or a valley meadow walk at dusk without leaving the developed area.

Hiking options. Vernal Fall via Mist Trail

Scenic stops. Vernal Fall

Overnight. Same base

Planning notes. Stay behind rails at the top. See the trail page for safety notes.

Day 3 — High viewpoint or exit

Glacier Point or valley rim · Half day plus exit · Driving: Glacier Point is a slow, winding road. Budget time.

Morning. If Glacier Point Road is open, drive up for the view and a short paved walk. If not, hike Four Mile Trail only if you have fitness and time to reverse it, or take the valley shuttle to additional viewpoints.

Afternoon. Begin the exit drive before the late-day gate crush if you have a flight or a long return.

Evening. Outside the park.

Hiking options. Glacier Point short walks or Four Mile Trail (strenuous)

Scenic stops. Glacier Point; Washburn Point

Overnight. Homeward or a foothills town

Planning notes. Mariposa Grove is a different road and a different day. Do not squeeze it unless Day 2 was easy.

Shorter Version

One night: valley walk at sunset, Mist Trail to the Vernal Fall footbridge at dawn, leave before afternoon heat.

Longer Version

Add a Tuolumne Meadows day when Tioga Road is open, or a second valley night so Glacier Point is not rushed.

FAQ

Can I add Sequoia the same weekend?

Not as a sane three-day Yosemite plan. Those are separate parks with their own driving and lodging puzzles.

What if it rains?

Valley walks still work. Granite steps get slick. Shorten Mist Trail to the bridge and skip exposed rims in lightning.
