Destination overview
Virginia’s Blue Ridge is where many east-coast travelers start a Parkway trip: Shenandoah National Park, Rockfish Gap, Peaks of Otter. Skyline Drive and the Parkway are related but not the same road. Mileposts, entrance fees, and closures differ. Deer at dusk are not a surprise. If you only have a weekend, Shenandoah plus a short Parkway stretch beats a race to North Carolina.
Best time to visit
October midweek for color. May for fuller waterfalls in the hollows. Winter closures happen.
