North Carolina
Destination overview
North Carolina on this site is tied to the Blue Ridge Parkway and the southern high country: Craggy Gardens, Waterrock Knob, and the approach to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Asheville is the practical extra night for food and a non-overlook morning. The Smokies themselves are crowded, foggy, and worth a dedicated plan; do not treat them as the last two hours of a Parkway drive.
Best time to visit
October for color (and traffic). June for higher-elevation bloom. Summer weekends on the Parkway are busy.
Recommended trip durations
- 3–4 days Parkway in-state
- Longer if you add a full Smokies stay
Best scenic viewpoints
- Craggy Gardens
- Waterrock Knob
- Parkway mileposts you actually stop at
Travel planning tips
- Fog at speed is the hazard. Headlights, distance, patience.
- Elk in the Smokies: stay in the car or at the required distance.
- Parkway concessions close. Carry a picnic.
Frequently asked questions
Parkway or the interstate?
The Parkway is the trip. The interstate is how you make a flight. Do not mix them in the same hour and call it scenic.
