5-Day Utah National Parks

Trip Overview

This is the companion plan to the Utah parks road-trip page, written as daily hiking choices. It assumes a Las Vegas start, a sedan, and no off-road travel. You will spend more hours in the car than a mountain-town vacation. The payoff is five distinct rock landscapes. If a park is using timed entry, that reservation is as important as the hotel.

Driving timeRoughly 10–14 hours of connecting drives across five days, not counting in-park roads
HikingOne featured hike most days, plus a short walk
OvernightsSpringdale, Bryce area, Torrey, Moab
Ideal seasonApril–May and September–October

Best Time to Go

Shoulder seasons. Avoid inner-canyon style heat in Zion and Moab at midday in July if you can.

Budget Considerations

We do not list live prices. Check current park fees and lodging quotes.

Packing List

Day-by-day structure

Day 1 — Zion

Zion National Park · Arrival plus 2–3 hours walking · Driving: About 2.5–3 hours from Las Vegas

Morning. Drive from Las Vegas. Enter, set lodging, visitor center.

Afternoon. Watchman Trail or Canyon Overlook if you came in from the east.

Evening. Springdale. Prepare shuttle timing and any permits.

Hiking options. Watchman Trail

Scenic stops. Towers of the Virgin at dusk from the visitor center area

Overnight. Springdale

Planning notes. If you arrive after 4 p.m., skip the longer hike.

Day 2 — Zion canyon day

Zion Canyon · 6–10 hours depending on the big hike · Driving: Shuttle day

Morning. Scout Lookout (or Angels Landing with permit) or Emerald Pools if you want less exposure.

Afternoon. Riverside Walk. Shade and a flatter grade.

Evening. Pack for an early Bryce transfer.

Hiking options. Angels Landing or Scout Lookout; Riverside Walk

Scenic stops. Zion Canyon walls from the Grotto and Temple of Sinawava

Overnight. Springdale

Planning notes. Turn around at Scout Lookout if the fin is the wrong call for anyone in the group.

Day 3 — Bryce Canyon

Bryce Canyon National Park · Drive plus 2–4 hours of trails · Driving: About 2–2.5 hours

Morning. Drive to Bryce. Temperature drop. Rim at Sunrise Point.

Afternoon. Queen’s Garden / Navajo Loop combination if open and not icy. Otherwise stay on the rim.

Evening. Bryce or Tropic.

Hiking options. Queen’s Garden / Navajo Loop

Scenic stops. Sunrise and Inspiration Points

Overnight. Bryce area

Planning notes. Hoodoo trails are steep. Knees on the way up matter more than the postcard.

Day 4 — Capitol Reef to Moab

Capitol Reef National Park then Moab · Mostly driving with one hike · Driving: A long connecting day: 12 plus I-70 plus 191

Morning. Scenic Byway 12. Slow down for pullouts that have legal parking.

Afternoon. Capitol Reef Scenic Drive and Hickman Bridge or a Fruita walk. Then continue to Moab.

Evening. Moab. Grocery and Arches reservation check.

Hiking options. Hickman Bridge (if time)

Scenic stops. Highway 12 overlooks; Capitol Reef slickrock

Overnight. Moab

Planning notes. This is the day people underestimate. Start at dawn from Bryce.

Day 5 — Arches and Canyonlands

Moab parks · Full park day · Driving: Short park roads, long if you return to Las Vegas the same night

Morning. Delicate Arch at a cool hour, or Windows Section if you want shorter walks. Confirm timed entry.

Afternoon. Island in the Sky: Mesa Arch and Grand View Point. Do not add Needles today.

Evening. Moab night or a Las Vegas return if you must—better to fly the next morning.

Hiking options. Delicate Arch; Mesa Arch

Scenic stops. Grand View Point; Shafer Canyon overlook

Overnight. Moab (preferred) or a very late Vegas arrival

Planning notes. Two parks in one day works only because Island in the Sky’s walks are short. Keep them short.

Shorter Version

Drop Capitol Reef and drive Zion–Bryce–Moab in four days, still spending two nights in Zion or Moab.

Longer Version

Add a second Moab night for Needles or a Colorado River slow morning. Add a second Zion night for a permit-dependent hike.

FAQ

Is five days enough for five parks?

Enough for a first look with hiking. Not enough to know any park well. That is a fair trade if you accept it.

What about the Narrows?

The Narrows is a river hike with flash-flood risk, seasonal closures, and gear needs. It can replace Day 2’s canyon hike when conditions are appropriate. Check Zion’s daily flood outlook.
