Zion National Park, Utah
Watchman Trail
A moderate-easy Zion hike from the visitor center to a canyon viewpoint. Good for the first afternoon in the park when shuttle timing is still unfamiliar.
Parking: Visitor center lots fill. Springdale shuttle may be the better arrival.
Permits: No permit. Treat the numbers on this page as planning ranges rather than measurements, and check the park’s trail report before you commit.
Overview
The Watchman Trail starts near the Zion Canyon Visitor Center and climbs to a viewpoint toward the Towers of the Virgin and the Watchman formation. It is not Angels Landing, and it should not be sold as a secret version of it. It is a useful first hike: close to parking, wide enough for conversation, and still a desert climb with sun and little water. Stay on the maintained trail. Social paths on crumbly sandstone are how viewpoints erode.
Why Hike This Trail
- You arrived mid-afternoon and want elevation without a shuttle puzzle.
- You are hiking with mixed fitness levels.
- You want sunset light without the Delicate Arch-style crowds of a different park.
Route Description
- Begin near the visitor center / Zion Canyon shuttle stop. Restroom first; there is nothing at the viewpoint.

What to Expect
- Heat on summer afternoons.
- A quieter trail than the Grotto hikes, though not empty.
