14 days · California, Utah, Arizona, and a mountain connector
14-Day American West Explorer
By the Compass & Trails editor · Last updated 20 September 2026
Trip Overview
Fourteen days is enough to connect Yosemite country with Utah and the Grand Canyon if you accept interstate connectors and two laundry/rest mornings. It is not enough to add Yellowstone, Glacier, and the Oregon coast. This itinerary is an honest west-of-the-Rockies sampler: four nights California, six nights Utah plateaus and Moab, three nights Arizona rim, one buffer. Fly into San Francisco or Las Vegas and out the other if open-jaw fares work. If they do not, a loop from Las Vegas with a Yosemite out-and-back eats miles; consider dropping Yosemite rather than driving drowsy.
Driving timeOften 35–45 hours of driving across two weeks if you include Yosemite and the Utah loop
HikingMist Trail, one Zion hike, Bryce hoodoos, Delicate Arch, Bright Angel turnaround
OvernightsYosemite gateway, Springdale, Bryce, Moab, South Rim
Ideal seasonSeptember is often the most workable compromise for Sierra and desert
Best Time to Go
Early September can still be hot in Moab and smoky in the Sierra. Late September cools the desert and can close high Sierra extras. There is no perfect week; pick which climate you can tolerate.
Budget Considerations
- Two weeks of mid-range lodging is the main cost.
- Open-jaw flights can save a full day of driving.
- Do not budget as if food is campstove-only unless you actually like cooking every night.
We do not list live prices. Check current park fees and lodging quotes.
Packing List
- Reusable grocery kit
- One rest-day book or offline download
- Car charger and a paper atlas
Day-by-day structure
Days 1–4 — Sierra / Yosemite
Yosemite National Park · Four nights · Driving: Arrival from SFO/OAK or from the south
Morning. Follow the 3-day Yosemite itinerary, plus one rest or Mariposa Grove / Wawona morning.
Afternoon. Do not add Tahoe.
Evening. Valley or gateway lodging.
Hiking options. Mist Trail; optional Glacier Point
Scenic stops. Tunnel View
Overnight. Yosemite area
Planning notes. Day 4 is a rest/laundry day on purpose.
Days 5–6 — Transfer to Zion
Southern Utah · Transfer block · Driving: A full day plus, depending on start
Morning. A long I-15 style transfer. Split into two half-days if you can overnight in Las Vegas or St. George.
Afternoon. Arrive Springdale without a big hike.
Evening. Zion gateway.
Hiking options. None, or Watchman if you arrive early
Scenic stops. Virgin River corridor
Overnight. Springdale
Planning notes. Two tired drivers beat one hero driver.
Days 7–10 — Utah parks
Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Moab · Four days of parks · Driving: The Utah loop
Morning. Run the 5-day Utah itinerary compressed by the fact you already arrived—use the extra night as slack.
Afternoon. Hikes as named on the 5-day page.
Evening. Moab by night 10.
Hiking options. Angels Landing or Scout Lookout; Bryce loop; Delicate Arch
Scenic stops. Highway 12
Overnight. As in the 5-day plan
Planning notes. If Yosemite ran long, drop Capitol Reef, not sleep.
Days 11–13 — Grand Canyon
South Rim · Three nights preferred · Driving: Moab to South Rim is not a quick hop
Morning. Transfer from Moab. This is a real drive. Split if needed.
Afternoon. Rim only on arrival day.
Evening. South Rim lodging if you planned ahead.
Hiking options. Bright Angel to a rest house on day 12; viewpoints on day 13
Scenic stops. South Rim at sunrise once
Overnight. South Rim / Tusayan
Planning notes. Day 12 is the canyon hike. Day 13 is easy on purpose.
Day 14 — Exit
Phoenix or Las Vegas · Exit · Driving: 3.5–5 hours typical to PHX or LAS depending on routing
Morning. Leave the rim in daylight.
Afternoon. Airport buffer.
Evening. Flight.
Hiking options. None
Scenic stops. None required
Overnight. Home
Planning notes. Do not book a 2 p.m. flight out of PHX if you are watching sunrise on the rim that morning.
Shorter Version
Use the 10-day Southwest plan and skip California.
Longer Version
Add a Rainier/Olympic week as a separate trip, not as days 15–18 of this drive.
Alternative Routes
- Start in Las Vegas, do Utah and Grand Canyon first, finish in Yosemite if Tioga is still open.
- Replace Yosemite with Death Valley only in the cooler months and only with heat literacy.
Common Planning Mistakes
- No rest day. Someone will get heat-sick or trail-cranky and the schedule breaks anyway.
- Night driving between parks to ‘make up’ a late start.
Planning notes
- This is a framework. Named hikes have their own pages—read those the night before.
- Fire closures can erase a Sierra week. Have a desert-only backup.
FAQ
Can we add Antelope Canyon and Monument Valley?
You can add one, not both, and you should add nights, not subtract sleep. Many visitors treat them as paid, guided, or tribal-land experiences with their own rules. Research the current operator and photography rules separately. This itinerary stays on NPS-focused public lands for clarity.
