How to Build a Multi-Day Travel Itinerary

Start from sleep and scarce permits, then place hikes, then place drives.

Nights first

Write the lodging list before the hike list. Distance between pillows determines whether a trail is possible. Two nights in one place create a hike day. One night creates a transfer day no matter how pretty the PDF looks.

One headline activity per day

A headline is a hike, a park, or a drive segment. Side quests are optional and first to drop. Compass & Trails itineraries name a headline in the day title on purpose.

Slack

Every four to five days, a morning without a gate time. Laundry, a later breakfast, a museum, a storm. Slack is not wasted vacation. It is how the rest of the vacation stays on the rails.

Shorter and longer versions

When you write a plan, add a sentence that starts with ‘If we lose a day…’ and one that starts with ‘If we gain two days…’ You will use one of them. Our published itineraries include those versions so you can steal the habit.

Practical tips

  • Put official links in the notes for each park: road status, shuttle, timed entry.
  • Do not schedule a dawn hike the morning after a 10 p.m. arrival.

FAQ

Should I plan every meal?

Plan groceries and one town dinner. Do not itinerary-ize lunch at a specific cafe 40 miles off the ridge.
