Wyoming

Destination overview

This first edition of Compass & Trails does not yet publish a full Yellowstone geyser itinerary. Wyoming is included because many American West trips try to add Tetons on the way to somewhere else and then run out of time. If you go, give Grand Teton its own night and walk a valley trail rather than photographing the range from a moving car. Yellowstone needs more than a single loop drive. Wildlife jams are traffic, not entertainment to approach on foot.

Best time to visit

Late June–September for high passes. October can be excellent and suddenly snowy.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see Yellowstone in a day from Jackson?

You can see a crowded geyser basin and a lot of the dashboard. Stay longer or skip it.
